It’s like the Soothie but better!

Hallelujah!  That’s how I felt when Thing 2 was 4 weeks old.  As a breastfeeding mother I was trying my best to follow all the ‘rules’ to be successful.  Four weeks meant I could start using a pacifier!!!  Much to my dismay Thing 2 had plans of her own.  We went through half a dozen pacis before we found one she tolerated.  The winner: Soothie.
I suppose their is a reason that hospitals choose the Soothie pacifier.  The simple one piece silicone construction, natural nipple design and a large ring that touches a babies nose to simulate breastfeeding.  As much as I appreciated the idea of the large ring I didn’t like the look.  Hawaii Medical soon developed a solution for mothers like me: the GumDrop!
The GumDrop adapts the best features of the Soothie like the one piece construction, natural nipple and lightweight silicone but with a new and improved shape.  As always this pacifier is Latex-free, BPA-free, Phthalate-free, PVC-free, Polycarbonate-free and Epoxy-free. The new shape is wonderful!  The GumDrop curves to fit a baby’s face and is shaped to fit below the nose.  A small hole is incorporated in the handle of the pacifier.  This facilitates the use of a pacifier clips and keepers so you never have to lose another paci.
Back in 2009 the GumDrop was only available for purchase from Hawaii Medical directly.  Parents today are in luck.  Learning Curve has begun distribution of the GumDrop nationwide in stores like Walmart, Target and Babies ‘R Us.  You can still order from the manufacturer directly and there is one reason to still do that: VANILLA!  There are four colors to choose from when ordering directly; pink, blue, purple or orange.  The pink, orange and blue colors can all be scented with vanilla which studies have shown can be soothing to infants.  The vanilla is devine and not at all overpowering.  Hawaii Medical says the scent can last up to 6 months.
To get the best deal order a 6 pack + 1 free (7 pack) from Hawaii Medical and use coupon code: “compare for 20% off.  You can get any color combination you choose.  After shipping this made each pacifier about $2 a piece which is a better deal then your local Babies ‘R Us.
I have never liked the look of pacifier keepers.  They look like strangulation hazards to me.  Hawaii Medical sells the cuddle square which can attach to your gumdrop pacifier and I decided to give it a try for two reasons.  First, I thought it would serve the same purpose as a keeper since it would be easier to find and harder to drop.  Two, maybe it would help Thing 2 soothe herself to sleep.  Thing 2 liked to cuddle with the square and it would soothe her but unfortunately for me it was rarely to sleep.  Not only is the cuddle square soft and cuddly but it helped prevent drops as I had hoped.
